Winter Family Camp
January 11-13, 2019
This winter we will be holding our first Winter Family Camp! This event will be organized and hosted by Camp Nakamun staff. It will be centered around families spending time outside doing all sorts of activities including skating, hockey, sledding, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, campfires, and sleigh rides.
If you're used to our summer Family Camps, this winter one will be similar, yet with a slightly more laid back feel. We want it to be a time where you can just enjoy each other and the beautiful outdoors we are blessed with here at Nakamun.
Other things to look forward to are our coffee bar, warm fireplace, indoor pool, gym, games, and a whole lot of great people!
We will hold a Sunday morning church service in the chapel with a guest speaker Jon Kramer from Westlock.
In 2004, Jon and Kim moved to Westlock, Alberta to complete his BTh degree through Ambrose University College. What was originally meant to be a nine month internship though, somehow turned into a long-term home for Kim and Jon - serving in the role of the Associate pastor at Westlock Alliance Church for the next ten years.
A couple of years after they welcomed their daughters into the world - Adeline (7) and Amity (5) - Jon stepped out of official church ministry and into full-time parenting, while Kim transitioned back into her nursing career. This recent stage of life has been both extremely joyful and challenging for them!
In the years that have followed, Kim has taken on the role of Care Manager at the Westlock Continuing Care Centre and Jon has devoted much of his free time to volunteering in the community: coaching with the Westlock Thunderbirds Football Club, helping out at his girls’ elementary school, pulpit supply preaching, and serving on the Children’s and Family Ministries Team at Westlock Alliance. Outside of his volunteering, Jon enjoys distance running, reading, and cheering on his Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Over the past few years, Jon’s faith has gone through some major transitions - as he’s rediscovered the person and Jesus, his love, and the beauty of the gospel. He is passionate about sharing the discoveries he has made throughout his journey, and is excited to have the opportunity to take in his first Nakamun retreat with his family.
This weekend we welcome the band X62 (Ten-62).
X62 marries the pop, electronic, and soul/RnB worlds of music. Thick harmonies, relaxed grooves, and creative vocal samples give this Edmonton-based duo their distinctive sound. In April, 2018, X62 took to the stage and won first place at MacEwan University's SAMU Showdown. Their highly anticipated single "Down" was released in August, which will be followed by an EP release planned for early 2019. This high energy electronic duo, backed by a live horn section, bring the groove everyone can move to.
Saturday break-out sessions will be an opportunity to hear from some professionals talk about some issues relevant to families.
We will have Marissa Garner, an Addictions Counselor for Alberta Health Services. She will share presentation on the hot topic of the year, Marijuana.
We will also have a presentation from Dr. Cath Thorlakson, Director of Pastoral Care & Counseling at Vanguard College in Edmonton. She will share tips and tricks for navigating mental health together as a family.
Childcare will be provided for Saturday's break-out sessions as well as for our Sunday morning service. Otherwise, enjoy the weekend together!
