Summer Staff Positions

Thank you for considering being a part of the ministry team here at Camp Nakamun this summer. Each summer over 75 staff (full-time, part-time and volunteers) help to make a week at Camp Nakamun a wonderful experience for the campers.

Spending a summer at a camp in ministry can be one of the most rewarding things you can do. It involves a lot of hard work and some times not a lot of sleep, but it is amazing to be a part of what God is doing in the lives of children and young people.

There are a number of different positions available. Some are paid and some are volunteer, some are for the entire summer and some are for just a week or two.

At Camp Nakamun the position that is the heart and soul of what we do is that of Senior Counselor. This position works directly with the campers each week and has the privilege and responsibility of having a huge impact on the lives of those campers. All the other positions are a support for the counselors enabling them to be the most effective in their ministry.

If you are interested in any of the positions I would encourage you to fill out the application form and mail, email or fax it in to the camp.

We will start to make hiring decisions on March 15th. To ensure that your application is considered you need to have it to the camp office by March 10th. Applications received after this date will only be considered based upon position availability.

If you need more information about any of these positions, please contact Rob either by phone or at staffing@campnakamun.com.

Before looking at specific positions, it is important that everyone who is thinking about applying for a summer positions has read and is in agreement with “HOW WE ACT AND THINK”  as well as the “STATEMENT OF FAITH”

[top]

How we think and act

Our desire as staff at Camp Nakamun is to glorify Christ in all we do. This desire, to let Christ dwell in us, and the fact that we are in a position of influence over younger people, impacts how we live our lives. We base our expectations of our staff on what we read in Colossians 3: 1-7 (the Message translation):

So if you're serious about living this new resurrection life with Christ, act like it. Pursue the things over which Christ presides. Don't shuffle along, eyes to the ground, absorbed with the things right in front of you. Look up, and be alert to what is going on around Christ--that's where the action is. See things from his perspective.

Your old life is dead. Your new life, which is your real life--even though invisible to spectators--is with Christ in God. He is your life. When Christ (your real life, remember) shows up again on this earth, you'll show up, too--the real you, the glorious you. Meanwhile, be content with obscurity, like Christ.

And that means killing off everything connected with that way of death: sexual promiscuity, impurity, lust, doing whatever you feel like whenever you feel like it, and grabbing whatever attracts your fancy. That's a life shaped by things and feelings instead of by God. It's because of this kind of thing that God is about to explode in anger. It wasn't long ago that you were doing all that stuff and not knowing any better. But you know better now, so make sure it's all gone for good: bad temper, irritability, meanness, profanity, dirty talk. Don't lie to one another. You're done with that old life. It's like a filthy set of ill-fitting clothes you've stripped off and put in the fire.

Now you're dressed in a new wardrobe. Every item of your new way of life is custom-made by the Creator, with his label on it. All the old fashions are now obsolete. Words like Jewish and non-Jewish, religious and irreligious, insider and outsider, uncivilized and uncouth, slave and free, mean nothing. From now on everyone is defined by Christ, everyone is included in Christ.

So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It's your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.

Let the peace of Christ keep you in tune with each other, in step with each other. None of this going off and doing your own thing. And cultivate thankfulness. Let the Word of Christ--the Message--have the run of the house. Give it plenty of room in your lives. Instruct and direct one another using good common sense. And sing, sing your hearts out to God! Let every detail in your lives--words, actions, whatever--be done in the name of the Master, Jesus, thanking God the Father every step of the way.

Although we are committed followers of Christ, we still sin and are not perfect. However, it is important that our attitude and approach to how we live, what we choose to wear, the music we listen to, etc, reflect our desire to be a person of influence. It is important that the appearance and behavior of the staff does not reflect poorly on the image of the camp. The camp has a policy for Camp Staff that limits facial piercing to the ears, and one eyebrow or nose jewel.

Being a member of the staff means you are willing to submit to the authority of the Camp Director, Executive Manager and Camp Board. If they need to approach you about an issue they will and may even ask you to change what you are doing or how you are presenting yourself.

When you come to camp you are in a position to influence kids as young as six years old.  This is the environment for love and gentleness (Phil. 4:5) to reign in every aspect of our lives including our appearance.  For some of you servant-hood may mean sacrifice in this area.  Be blessed as you seek to make the right choices.

Statement of Faith

We believe there is one God existing eternally in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Jesus Christ the Son is true God and true man and is the only way for mankind to be reconciled to God. Without Jesus people are lost in their sin and destined to eternal separation from God. Salvation is a free gift received through faith and trust in Jesus and accepting His forgiveness. The Holy Spirit gives the believer the strength and ability to follow God's will in life. The Bible is accepted as God's inspired, inerrant word and constitutes the Divine and only rule of Christian faith and practice.  We are called to worship and serve God wholeheartedly, sharing His message of love with our world.

Summary of Positions

Counselor Team

Each summer a dedicated, hard working team of counselors form the foundation for the entire summer of ministry – it really is the most important ministry role there is during the summer months. This year we are looking to hire 10 female counselors and 7 male counselors for the entire summer. We are also looking for volunteers who are not able to commit to the entire summer, but would like to come out for 1 to 3 weeks.

The role of counselor is a ministry position. You do get paid for being a counselor, but it is not just another summer job. You need to have the right reasons for applying and come to camp with the right attitude. What you will be involved in for the summer is more like being a missionary than working at a store or doing construction. You need to be a person who is committed to following Christ and who, because of this relationship, wants to make a difference in others. You will be responsible for a group of children/teens each week and you need to be there for them.

Being a counselor at camp for the summer is a big responsibility and commitment: you will have long hours, you will be tired, you will have to deal with issues and you will be stressed. There may be times when you might be tempted to quit, but the commitment you are making is for the entire summer. This is not to scare you, but to make sure you are at least beginning to understand what is expected of you. At the same time, a summer counseling at camp can be one of the most rewarding and wonderful times of your life.

Many people who counsel at camp come back year after year. At least part of the reason is that they know they are making a difference in the lives of others. You will have the joy of seeing God use you in ways you would have never imagined. You will grow in your relationship with God as you face the challenges in ministering at camp. You will make great friends that will last your life as you experience joy and sorrow together. So come expecting your summer to be hard, wonderful, challenging, joy-filled, frustrating, rewarding and a summer that will change you.

What You Can Expect

If you are accepted as a counselor/missionary for the summer here are a few things you can expect. You will begin your summer on Tuesday June 24th and 9:00 am. Your summer will be over Friday August 29 at 8:00 pm. You will be compensated for your ministry at the following scale:  1st year counselor - $320.00 per week, 2nd year - $350.00 per week, 3rd year - $380.00 per. If you have special certification, like a life-guard, you will receive an additional $30.00 per week.

  • When you choose to work at camp this summer you choose to put this ministry first.  This is not a dating environment.  This means all guy/girl relationships should be on the friendship level only and never detract from effective ministry to the campers.
  • You must allow for proper rest during your time off.

The Action Team

The A-team is responsible for the leading, planning and running of the camps during the summer. It is the area of highest responsibility because if something goes wrong or needs to be adapted, this team is responsible. Although there are different roles on the A-Team (four to be exact) these individual roles are secondary to the main team responsibility. If you apply to the leadership team you need to remember that you are applying to the team first and then a specific role secondly. When applying for the A-team you can apply for a specific role, or just to the team in general.

A Word of Caution

Although in some ways being on the A-team looks like a level up from a counselor, they are really two different positions with different expectations. One of the major differences is that being on the A-team often means you are one step removed from interacting and impacting the kids. Your role is to help create the environment and atmosphere that enables the counselors to have an impact on the lives of the campers. For example rather than being the one to have the privilege of praying with a camper, you will be the one running the programs and scheduling activities. If what you really love about being at camp is the opportunity to impact the lives of the kids in a direct way, then I would encourage you to remain as a counselor.

Now this does not mean that being on this team isn’t a lot of fun and that it isn’t a ministry role. It is both of those things, but it is very different from being a counselor.

Specific A-Team Roles

These role descriptions are intended to give a glimpse at what you will be doing, but not to limit the areas you will be involved in.

  1. Assistant Director – This person works directly with the Camp director to ensure that everything happens as it is supposed to.
